Since September, Staatsoper Hannover has been captivating audiences with Philip Glass’ Satyagraha, featuring tenor Shanul Sharma in the role of Mahatma Gandhi, a performance highly acclaimed by critics. Directed by Laura Scozzi, this powerful production brings Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance to life through Glass' beautiful score and evocative staging.
The opera, sung in Sanskrit, draws its text from the Bhagavad Gita and is part of Glass’ renowned portrait trilogy, focusing on historical figures who changed the world. Satyagraha delves deep into Gandhi’s early experiences in South Africa, portraying his development of non-violent resistance as a tool for social and political change.
