Alexander Pushkin's short story »Pique Dame« tells the tale of three enchanted playing cards which promise fantastic winnings, but may also hold great disaster. The old Countess, formerly known as the Queen of Spades because of her passion for gambling, guards the cards' secret with her life. Hermann, a penniless officer, becomes obsessed with obtaining the secret of the cards and is willing to risk everything for it: life, love and even his own existence. Peter Tchaikovsky turned this story of human avarice into an opera, bringing another main theme into the limelight: love, in the form of Lisa, who follows Herman to the point of self-destruction. Uwe Eric Laufenberg directs Tchaikovsky's parable, with stage and costume designs by Rolf and Marianne Glittenberg.
